One of my favorite villains of all time is Joker from the DC universe. He is portrayed as a very mysterious and evil character who just wants to see the city of Gotham burn. He is the antagonist in one of my favorite movies “The Dark Knight”. The first five minutes of the movie show who he is as a character before Batman is even introduced. The movie begins with a shot of a man facing away from the camera holding a gun and a clown mask. The fact that he is on his own shows that he will be important. He is then picked up by two other people wearing clown masks. They discuss the heist they are about to attempt but the lone clown doesn’t say a word, establishing a mysterious aura around this individual clown. The rest of the scene has very fast cuts so you can see every stage of the heist and the different jobs each clown has. They have a crane shot of two clowns zip lining to the roof of the bank. There is also a still shot in front of the bank safe. The dialogue in this movie is very well scripted. The clown henchmen are constantly talking about the Joker and revealing interesting little tidbits about the character that create more mystery and also show how violent the character is. An example of this is that he has every clown kill one other clown after their job in the heist is done. He does this till it’s just him and one more clown left and he kills him after he gets all the money in the bus. This shows how brutal the Joker is. The music ins this movie is very good at setting the tone. In this scene it starts off mellow but as soon as the clowns start shooting up the bank the music gets very intense. Another good representation of the good music is when Joker is revealed. He sticks a grenade in the bank manager's mouth and utters the words “What doesn’t kill you makes you… stranger!” During the pause in his speech he takes off his clown mask to reveal his clown makeup. When he takes off the mask there is a sudden boom in the music to help propel and intensify the moment. The Joker's’ intelligence is also put in display in this scene. He was the planner for the whole heist. The heist is executed with no issues at all and the Joker escapes without any problem because he calculated every step of the heist perfectly. This scene is very important to the rest of the movie. This is because the plot of the movie is about the Joker killing the Batman for the Mafias that run Gotham. He steals the money from the bank and the money is the Mafias money, which Joker also knew. He stole the money so that the MAfia would think they were in danger forcing them to turn to the joker for help.
